Freelancing is a dream for many people. You’re not bound by fixed working hours or forced to clock in and out. No one tells you how or when you must work. You don’t have to read anyone’s mood or follow someone else’s expectations. You’re free to manage your time, pursue your interests, decide whether to work or not, and you answer to no one.
But is that really the full picture?
If you've never experienced the ups and downs of freelance life, I invite you to take a look through the lens of someone who has lived it — someone like me.
Freedom has always been a deep human desire — but do you know the price of it isn’t as soft and simple as the way the word rolls off your tongue?
Whether it’s freedom in your work, your relationships, or even your thoughts and beliefs, it doesn’t come without cost. To truly have freedom, you need a certain set of rules. You have to discipline yourself and stick to them — especially if you genuinely want to reach what you’ve been longing for.
Discipline — the first and most essential key you must firmly hold on to.
The ultimate goal of work is to achieve the results you aim for — and discipline isn't just for salaried employees; freelancers are no exception.
If you're working at a company or in an office under a boss, then naturally, your discipline is set by that boss. But if you're working freely from home, then you are your own boss. And the person you have to overcome is no one else but yourself.
When you’re freelancing, instead of following someone else’s directions, you have to lay out your own work plans: when to start, when to finish, what specific steps to take, what tools you'll need, what advantages or obstacles you might face. You need to prepare everything — your resources, your finances, your relationships, your knowledge. You even need to have contingency plans — Plan B, Plan C — for when things don’t go smoothly.
You also need to be mindful of your mindset throughout the entire process. What attitude will you carry when things go well? And if they don’t, will you still have the courage to start over again with a positive outlook?
You're the one setting the standards, you're the one carrying them out, and in the end, you're also the one evaluating your own performance — how disciplined you were, how much you achieved, what lessons you’ve learned, what to improve, and what to cut back on.
Sounds like a lot, right? Honestly, it is tough in the beginning — especially for those who struggle with discipline or find it hard to stick to rules.
But it’s not so hard that you can’t do it. As long as you take your goals seriously — wake up a little earlier, let your desire for success burn strong, and keep your motivation alive — you will overcome yourself.
At that point, following your own rules won’t feel difficult anymore. After all, you’re the one who made those rules. If you can’t even follow through with what you want, then honestly, who else do you expect to do it for you? Haha.
So before you begin, your first task is to dare. Dare to let go of bad habits, dare to push past procrastination, and be brave enough to start — even if what you’re doing doesn’t feel comfortable at first. Dare to follow discipline, no matter what it takes.
I’ve often heard the saying, “Just keep going and you’ll get there,” and I truly believe it. If you stumble, get back up and keep moving forward — your moment of glory will surely come, and maybe sooner than you think.
